In the busy times of the modern world where demands of security systems have to come to a great scale, motion sensors hold an important place in the industry. It contributes to the accuracy of detection of security breaches, ensuring optimal monitoring and safety. Motion sensors detect movement, and this causes the sensors to trigger. A signal denoting the breach is transferred to the control panel which is then processed and sent to the monitoring system, alerting of the intrusion.
The criteria of a motion sensor are to provide information of any intrusion at a given space. A motion sensor can be operational when you are out of the premises or at night when you are asleep. A few security systems have a live stream connected to the house PC, phones, or any other device via which the motion sensor sends a signal as soon as any movement is detected.
Uses of Motion Sensors
There can be multiple uses of the motion sensors other than detecting burglary or theft. Children’s curfew hours, doorbell triggers if someone wanders around the premise, restricts certain areas of the premises for kids and triggers the alarm if anyone is found around, control of building lights in places not needed and even surveillance of pets entering places they are not supposed to.
Motion sensors come in various types to suit the needs of the security seeker. Each of them works a specific way to ensure the detection of a body in the area. The Passive Infrared sensors, advised to place a few feet away from heat sources, use infrared to detect the heat of the body to assure the presence of an intruder.
How A Motion Sensor Works
Once the motion sensor is activated, it can sense the heat and motion of the body and signal to the control panel to alert of the anomaly. The Microwave Sensors works through a different engineering – it emits microwaves into the surrounding and looks for the reflection of the waves from the object via Doppler’s Effect. These sensors are also case-sensitive where electrical lines are involved and are also on the pricier side of the range.
To reduce the anomaly from both the prior mentioned motion sensors, there’s also one that combines the technology of both called the Dual Technology Motion Sensors which morphs the two and puts double gate before the sensors are tripped to be alarmed of the intrusion. The Area Reflective LED follows a similar principle as the Infrared except here, it is emitted through an LED like the name suggests which triggers the alarm if the distance between the subject and protected area is less. The Ultrasonic sensor also uses the same principle as the microwave where sonic waves are emitted and the reflected waves are detected to pinpoint the trespass.
Positioning Your Motion Sensor
Motion sensors must be placed at “choke points” so that the detection of any kind of movement is not left out. A further investigation of burglar-prone areas is advised so that the placement of the sensors is smartly done. It is also ideal to place the sensors parallel to the pathway of the intruders so the alarm is effectively set off.
Other than just alerting of the residents of any intrusion, motion sensors can come of other uses as well. Wireless motion sensors; very easily installable; like contact motion sensors, can be triggered if a window or door is opened. Motion sensors also have universal uses other than security such as control of doors, water supply, electricity, ATM displays etc.
